El Torcal it has an expanse of 12,000 he. located on a mountainous line of 35 Km2. It has an average height of 1,000 metres, with its highest located on Camorro Alto (Sierra de la Chimenea), at 1,377 metres. It has a Mediterranean mountain climate, with cool winters and warm summers, rain in spring and autumn and the regular presence of fog..

El Torcal has been recognised as a legally protected site since it was declared a Natural Site of National Interest in 1929. Later, due to its geological, botanical and panoramic interest, it was reclassified as a Natural Park in 1978, and now enjoys the protection granted by its qualification as a Natural Site (Law 2/1989, 18 July).

Location

El Paraje Natural del Torcal se encuentra localizado en la zona centro de la provincia de Málaga, formando parte del arco calizo de las Sierras Sub-béticas.

The El Torcal Natural Park is located in the central area of Malaga Province, forming part of the limestone arch of the Sub-Betic system.

Torcal can be reached from Malaga by turning off the N-331 at Casabermeja onto the local highway that goes to Villanueva de la Concepción, which runs for about 6 kilometres before reaching the turnoff for Torcal.

From Antequera, take Regional 3,310 to Villanueva de la Concepción, finding us at the crossroads for El Torcal, 12 Km after passing the port of “La Boca del Asno”.

Two other options are taking highway C-3310 from Malaga through Almogía, to access Villanueva de la Concepción, or leave N-331 at marker Km 140.5 in order to follow the highway that goes to that town by Puerto del Barco.

What you can find

Apart from its famous karst formation, spectacular fauna can be found in El Torcal. Some 116 species of vertebrates have been inventoried within the Site, in addition to a multitude of invertebrates. The fox, badger, weasel, mountain goat and griffon vulture are just a few examples of the broad variety of fauna in this site. The rich and varied flora of the El Torcal massif should also be noted, highlighting the presence of endemic species of vast interest.
