The Pastelero and Santa Maria del Cerro districts are located between Villanueva de la Concepción and Almogía. The difference between them is that, while Pastelero has a concentration of housing, in Santa Maria del Cerro the houses are more spread out. Pastelero’s origin dates back to 1922 when a married couple settled there. Their descendants formed what we know today as Pastelero. The creation of Santa Maria del Cerro was earlier, although it was not until the last century when the district had a significant number of homes. Both districts currently total about 500 inhabitants.
One of the principal values of both districts is the great unity existing between residents. As a result of this they have managed to even enjoy their own fair (in the middle of July) and their own Holy Week procession.
As far as services, while in Pastelero it is possible to enjoy the hospitality of each of its two bars, or delicious homemade bread in the bakery, Santa Maria del Cerro is home to a school that teaches about 35 children daily, a cheese factory and the site of the El Cerro-Villa del Torcal Cultural Association, which hosts numerous activities throughout the year, from dance classes, gymnastics, traditional music festivals, etc. to choirs, pastorals, clay artists, flamenco, etc.
Indeed, Santa Maria del Cerro and Pastelero are two districts whose history and geographic location have led them forward hand-in-hand, and it is in just that unity where their main value lies.
